Wet Wraps & Diluted Bleach Baths for Severe Childhood Eczema

The advice

  1. These are two powerful helper techniques for severe eczema flares, used under your doctor's guidance — they complement the core treatment, never replace it.
  2. Wet wraps: a lukewarm bath → the treatment cream and moisturizer as prescribed → a cotton layer dampened with warm water (pyjamas or tubular gauze) → a dry layer on top.
  3. Wraps stay on for two to four hours or overnight, repeated for a few days as instructed — and no strong cortisone underneath unless the doctor specified it (absorption rises under occlusion).
  4. A diluted bleach bath lowers skin bacteria in the frequently infected child: half a cup (120 ml) of plain unscented household bleach in a FULL standard tub (~150 L), quarter cup for a half tub — a pool-like concentration.
  5. Soak 5–10 minutes from the neck down keeping face and eyes clear, then rinse if you prefer, pat dry and moisturize immediately — two to three times weekly.
  6. Never apply bleach directly to the skin, and stop the baths if irritation increases.
  7. Signs of infection (oozing, honey-coloured crusts, fever) need clinic treatment first — never wrap infected skin.
  8. Keep up intensive daily moisturizing and the prescribed creams — they are the foundation these add-ons build upon.
