Diaper Rash Advice

A patient advice sheet — 8 practical points. Reviewed and updated by Dr. Abdulaziz AlRashed, July 2026.

The advice

  1. Change the diaper frequently — every 2–3 hours and immediately after stools.
  2. Clean gently with water and soft cotton, or fragrance-free alcohol-free wipes; pat dry — do not rub.
  3. Apply a thick layer of zinc-oxide barrier cream (e.g., Sudocrem) at every change — no need to fully remove the old layer when cleaning. Rarely, some children react to it.
  4. Diaper-free time: leave the baby without a diaper for one hour daily (can be split) for airing.
  5. Apply the prescribed treatment cream twice daily on the rash.
  6. Avoid talcum powder completely.
  7. Diarrhea worsens the rash — increase diaper changes and barrier cream during it.
  8. See the doctor if the rash worsens, pustules or scattered red spots appear around the area (yeast infection), or fever develops.
