Genital Warts – Information & Treatment

A patient advice sheet — 8 practical points. Reviewed and updated by Dr. Abdulaziz AlRashed, July 2026.

The advice

  1. Genital warts are a very common HPV infection and are fully treatable — coming in for review is the right step; never hesitate.
  2. Treatment removes visible warts (freezing, cautery or laser in clinic, or prescribed home creams); several sessions may be needed, and recurrence is possible especially in the first months — so follow-up matters.
  3. Never use wart paints made for hands and feet on the genital area, and prescribed home treatment creams are not used during pregnancy.
  4. The wart-causing HPV types usually differ from the cancer-associated types — and women continue their routine cervical screening with their gynaecologist.
  5. The HPV vaccine protects against the main wart-causing and cancer-causing types, and helps even after infection by preventing other types — ask about its availability.
  6. The infection spreads by direct skin contact; condoms reduce (but do not fully prevent) transmission, and informing your partner — with a check if they have lesions — is advisable.
  7. Stopping smoking improves the response of warts to treatment.
  8. Persistent itching, bleeding or ulceration in the area always deserves examination.
