Ringworm (Tinea Corporis / Cruris) Advice

A patient advice sheet — 7 practical points. Reviewed and updated by Dr. Abdulaziz AlRashed, July 2026.

The advice

  1. Ringworm is a fungal infection spread by contact (people, pets, shared towels) and thrives on sweat and skin folds.
  2. Apply the antifungal cream twice daily, covering 2 cm of normal skin beyond the edge, and continue for two weeks after the rash clears.
  3. Important warning: do NOT use cortisone creams or mixed creams (cortisone + antifungal) on it — they mask the rash, spread the infection and make treatment harder.
  4. Wash towels and clothing in hot water, never share towels, dry skin folds well, and wear loose cotton underwear.
  5. Treat athlete's foot at the same time if present — it is a common source of groin infection.
  6. Check family members and pets for scaly patches and treat them.
  7. Widespread infection, or involvement of the scalp or nails, needs oral treatment from your doctor.
