Advice for Hand Eczema Patients

A patient advice sheet — 8 practical points. Reviewed and updated by Dr. Abdulaziz AlRashed, July 2026.

The advice

  1. Repeated water and soap are the main enemy: cut unnecessary washing, and use lukewarm water with a gentle fragrance-free cleanser.
  2. Pat your hands fully dry — including between the fingers — after every wash or wudu, then apply moisturizer immediately.
  3. Moisturize after every wash and before sleep (a greasy ointment at night, optionally under cotton gloves).
  4. For wet work and detergents: cotton gloves underneath nitrile/vinyl gloves on top, and no longer than 20 minutes continuously.
  5. Avoid direct contact with detergents, antiseptics and onion/garlic juice, and remove rings during housework — soap collects underneath them.
  6. Fragrance-free alcohol sanitizer is gentler than repeated washing when hands are not visibly dirty.
  7. Use the prescribed treatment cream during flares as directed — moisturizer alone is not enough then.
  8. If it does not improve despite good care, patch testing can uncover a contact allergy (nickel, fragrances, preservatives, hair dye or black henna).
