Dry Skin & Winter/AC Itch Advice

A patient advice sheet — 7 practical points. Reviewed and updated by Dr. Abdulaziz AlRashed, July 2026.

The advice

  1. Dry skin is the commonest cause of itching as we get older, and it worsens here with constant air-conditioning and low humidity.
  2. Showering: once daily or less, lukewarm not hot, for 5–10 minutes, with a gentle oil-based wash — no harsh soap and no loofah.
  3. Moisturize within 3 minutes of towel-drying: ointments and rich creams (with urea, ceramides or Vaseline) beat light lotions — at least twice daily, especially the legs.
  4. Use a room humidifier in the bedroom if the AC runs continuously.
  5. Wear soft cotton; wool irritates directly on skin, and wash new clothes before wearing with a fragrance-free detergent.
  6. Keep nails short, and use cool compresses during an itch attack instead of scratching.
  7. If itching persists despite a month of correct care, or is severe with no clear rash, we check internal causes (thyroid, kidneys, iron, diabetes…).
