Nickel Allergy – Avoidance Guide

A patient advice sheet — 8 practical points. Reviewed and updated by Dr. Abdulaziz AlRashed, July 2026.

The advice

  1. Nickel is the commonest cause of contact allergy: earrings and jewellery, watch backs, jeans buttons, belt buckles, glasses frames, keys and coins.
  2. The rash appears where metal touches the skin and can spread around it, and it worsens with sweating in Kuwait's heat — sweat leaches nickel out of metal.
  3. Choose safe alternatives: titanium, platinum, high-karat gold, or items explicitly labelled nickel-free — and first ear piercings should be with titanium studs.
  4. Practical tricks: coat the jeans button and watch back with clear nail polish (renew it regularly) or a fabric barrier, and minimise hand contact with keys and coins.
  5. A simple spot test (dimethylglyoxime) can check any item before you buy it — ask us about it.
  6. A low-nickel diet is only for selected, unusually severe cases — the doctor decides.
  7. Consistent avoidance is the real treatment; the prescribed cream settles flares when they happen.
  8. After patch testing you receive a detailed list of hidden nickel sources — keep it on your phone.
