Advice for Shingles (Herpes Zoster) Patients

The advice

  1. Shingles is a reactivation of the dormant chickenpox virus in your body; you do not catch it from others, but blister fluid can give chickenpox to those never infected or vaccinated.
  2. Start the antiviral immediately — it works best within 72 hours of the rash appearing; it reduces severity and nerve pain.
  3. Cover the rash, wear loose cotton, and avoid contact with pregnant women, newborns and the immunocompromised until the blisters dry and crust.
  4. Do not burst the blisters or apply folk remedies (kohl, herbs, henna); clean gently, keep dry — cool compresses ease the pain.
  5. Nerve pain may persist after the skin heals, especially over age 50 — tell your doctor; effective treatment exists and starting early is better.
  6. Rash on the nose or around the eye = urgent same-day review, to protect the eye.
  7. After recovery: an effective vaccine (from age 50) protects against recurrence and nerve pain — ask about it.
  8. Rest — healing usually takes 2–4 weeks.
