Ingrown Hairs & Shaving Bumps Advice

The advice

  1. The cause is the sharply cut hair curling back into the skin instead of growing out; it is commonest with curly hair and darker skin, on the beard, neck and hair-removal areas.
  2. The best definitive fix is reducing sharp hair removal — laser is an excellent, effective option, especially for darker skin using suitable devices.
  3. When shaving: warm water and shaving gel, a single clean blade (or an electric trimmer leaving short stubble), WITH the direction of growth, without stretching the skin or repeating strokes over the same spot.
  4. Do not tweeze an ingrown hair out from the root; only release its tip with a sterile needle if it is visible under the skin.
  5. Waxing, threading and plucking make the problem worse in those prone to it.
  6. Exfoliate gently twice weekly (a salicylic acid wash or a soft glove) to keep follicle openings clear.
  7. Prescription creams (a night retinoid, benzoyl peroxide, an anti-inflammatory) improve it greatly — use as prescribed.
  8. Dark marks after the inflammation are common in our skin and are treated after the inflammation itself is controlled.
