Keratosis Pilaris ("Chicken Skin") Advice

A patient advice sheet — 7 practical points. Reviewed and updated by Dr. Abdulaziz AlRashed, July 2026.

The advice

  1. Keratosis pilaris is a common, harmless genetic condition: small rough bumps on the arms, thighs and cheeks.
  2. It is not a disease to worry about, and it improves considerably with age; the goal is better texture and appearance.
  3. Do not scrub it with loofahs or rough exfoliants — scrubbing increases redness and roughness.
  4. The mainstay is moisturizers containing urea, lactic acid or salicylic acid, daily, right after showering.
  5. Shower briefly with lukewarm water and a gentle cleanser.
  6. Improvement appears after weeks of consistency, and it returns if you stop — make moisturizing a permanent routine.
  7. For marked redness or bothersome cases: prescription creams or laser sessions may help — ask your doctor.
