Pulsed-Dye Laser (PDL) for Rosacea & Vessels

A patient advice sheet — 8 practical points. Reviewed and updated by Dr. Abdulaziz AlRashed, July 2026.

The advice

  1. Pulsed-dye laser (PDL) is the standard treatment for rosacea redness, visible small vessels and red scars.
  2. After: mild redness and swelling for hours up to two days is normal; cool compresses help.
  3. With stronger settings, purple bruising (purpura) lasting 5–10 days can appear — sometimes expected, and part of effective treatment of obvious vessels.
  4. Avoid heat, sauna and hard exercise for 24–48 hours, do not rub the area, and covering make-up is fine after 24 hours if the skin is intact.
  5. SPF 50+ and no direct sun for 2–4 weeks before and after sessions — a tan reduces both safety and effect.
  6. Vessels can look darker before they fade; results show over weeks — the usual rosacea program is 2–4 sessions at 4–6 week intervals, and redness can slowly return over the years, so maintenance sessions help.
  7. For rosacea patients: laser clears existing vessels and redness but not the tendency — continue trigger avoidance and your prescribed treatment.
  8. Contact us for: blisters, open wounds or marked pain.
