Oral Antibiotics for Acne (Doxycycline)

The advice

  1. Antibiotics are a temporary phase (usually 3 months) and are always combined with topicals (benzoyl peroxide reduces bacterial resistance) — never extend the course on your own or use them alone.
  2. How you take it matters: swallow with a full glass of water and stay upright for 30–60 minutes (lying down straight after can cause painful pill esophagitis); take with food if it causes nausea.
  3. Separate it from milk and dairy, iron and antacids by at least two hours — they reduce its absorption.
  4. Sun sensitivity is the key side effect under Kuwait's sun: strict sunscreen, avoid peak hours, and tell us if a severe sunburn-like redness appears.
  5. Not allowed in pregnancy, breastfeeding, or young children — tell us immediately when planning pregnancy so we switch the plan.
  6. Never combined with Roaccutane (isotretinoin).
  7. Improvement starts after 4–8 weeks — complete the prescribed course, then we maintain the result with topicals.
  8. Stop and contact us for: severe persistent headache or visual change, severe diarrhoea, or a worsening rash.
