Advice for Hyperhidrosis Patients

A patient advice sheet — 8 practical points. Reviewed and updated by Dr. Abdulaziz AlRashed, July 2026.

The advice

  1. Hyperhidrosis is a real, treatable medical condition — not just "nervousness".
  2. First line is an aluminium-chloride antiperspirant: apply at night to completely dry skin and wash off in the morning; daily at first, then space out as you improve.
  3. Mild stinging or itching at first is normal — space out applications and moisturize during the day if it happens.
  4. An antiperspirant is different from a deodorant, and it can be used on underarms, palms and soles.
  5. Choose breathable cotton fabrics and dark or white colours that hide marks, absorbent insoles, and keep spare clothing.
  6. Caffeine, spicy food and stress increase sweating episodes.
  7. Stronger, very effective options exist: iontophoresis (water-current device), Botox injections for underarms (effective 4–6+ months), tablets, and energy devices — discuss them with your doctor.
  8. Sudden generalized night sweating with weight loss needs a general medical evaluation.
