Advice for Psoriasis Patients

A patient advice sheet — 9 practical points. Reviewed and updated by Dr. Abdulaziz AlRashed, July 2026.

The advice

  1. Psoriasis is a chronic immune condition — absolutely not contagious — and can be controlled excellently with modern treatments, from creams to biologics.
  2. Moisturize daily and generously; it reduces scaling, itching and cracking.
  3. Do not scratch or pick the plaques — skin injury triggers new psoriasis at that site.
  4. Avoid triggers: smoking, alcohol, stress and throat infections, and tell any doctor you visit that you have psoriasis before new medicines are prescribed.
  5. Weight loss noticeably improves psoriasis and boosts treatment response.
  6. Psoriasis is linked to diabetes, blood pressure, cholesterol and heart disease — have them checked periodically.
  7. Joint pain, morning stiffness or nail changes? Tell your dermatologist promptly — early treatment of psoriatic arthritis prevents joint damage.
  8. Do not stop treatment suddenly when the skin clears without consulting — abrupt stopping can cause a severe flare.
  9. Moderate sun exposure may help, but avoid sunburn — it is not a substitute for treatment.
