The advice

  1. A keloid is a scar that grows beyond the original wound due to a genetic tendency; it is more common in darker skin and on the chest, shoulders and earlobes.
  2. Prevention is the best treatment: avoid piercings, tattoos and unnecessary procedures if you are prone, and tell any surgeon about your tendency before operations.
  3. Treat acne and ingrown hairs early — their chronic inflammation creates new keloids.
  4. For fresh wounds: silicone gel or sheets daily for 2–3 months after healing, plus sun protection on the scar.
  5. For existing keloids: monthly cortisone injection sessions are the mainstay, sometimes combined with freezing or laser; surgery alone often brings the keloid back larger.
  6. For earlobe keloids: pressure earrings after treatment reduce recurrence.
  7. Itching and pain in keloids are common and treatable.
  8. Results need multiple sessions and patience — keeping your appointments is the key.
