The advice
- Molluscum are shiny viral bumps, common in children; harmless and usually clearing on their own within 6–18 months.
- It spreads by contact and sharing (towels, water toys, bathing together) and by scratching from one spot to another on the same child.
- Keep the child's nails short and stop them squeezing or picking the bumps — squeezing causes infection and scars.
- Cover the bumps with a plaster when swimming, give the child their own towel, and avoid shared baths during the infection.
- The skin around the bumps often becomes dry and eczema-like: moisturize regularly and treat the itch to limit spread.
- Clinic treatments or home solutions can speed clearance if you wish — discuss them with your doctor.
- School and nursery attendance is allowed and normal.
