Advice for Vitiligo Patients

A patient advice sheet — 9 practical points. Reviewed and updated by Dr. Abdulaziz AlRashed, July 2026.

The advice

  1. Vitiligo is an immune condition in which some pigment cells lose their colour; it is not contagious, not painful, and does not affect general health.
  2. Early treatment gives better results, especially on the face — don't delay review when new patches appear.
  3. Effective options exist: creams (including a new JAK-inhibitor cream), phototherapy (narrow-band UVB), and surgical options for stable cases — discuss what suits you.
  4. Use SPF 50+ sunscreen on the white patches — they burn quickly, and protecting normal skin from tanning reduces the colour contrast.
  5. Avoid skin injury and strong friction (scratching, rubbing, tight clothes) — trauma can trigger new patches.
  6. Results are slow and need months: the face responds best; hands and feet are slowest — patience is part of the treatment.
  7. Check thyroid function periodically — vitiligo can be associated with autoimmune thyroid disease.
  8. Camouflage and cover products are safe and available; do not trust unproven folk remedies.
  9. Psychological support matters — vitiligo does not prevent a full, normal life.
