Advice for Hair Loss Patients

The advice

  1. Washing does not cause hair loss — hairs shed in the shower were already released. Wash 2–3 times weekly, or as needed, with a suitable medicated shampoo and lukewarm water.
  2. Blow-dry on a cool setting, held well away from the scalp.
  3. Avoid chemical straightening (keratin, protein, Brazilian, "gold water"): they damage hair, irritate the scalp and increase shedding.
  4. A weekly oil bath or hair mask is a far gentler alternative to chemical smoothing.
  5. Avoid tight pulling by hijab, ponytails or clips — chronic traction causes permanent frontal hair loss (traction alopecia).
  6. Supplements help only if you have a deficiency — we check iron stores (ferritin), vitamin D and thyroid first. Avoid high-dose biotin without advice; it interferes with blood test results.
  7. Eat a balanced, protein-rich diet and avoid crash diets — rapid weight loss triggers temporary shedding.
  8. Most shedding after childbirth, illness, surgery or stress is temporary and recovers within 6–9 months. Proven treatments exist (e.g., minoxidil) — ask your doctor.
