Advice for Viral Warts Patients

A patient advice sheet — 6 practical points. Reviewed and updated by Dr. Abdulaziz AlRashed, July 2026.

The advice

  1. Warts are a common viral skin infection; harmless but contagious by touch and shared items, and often resolve on their own — especially in children.
  2. Treatment needs repeated sessions (freezing or acid solutions) — results take weeks to months of commitment, so keep your appointments.
  3. Home salicylic acid treatment: soak the area in warm water, file the dead skin with a single-use file, then apply the solution daily — it may need 2–3 months.
  4. Do not pick, bite or shave over a wart — that spreads it. Cover it with a plaster and use your own towel.
  5. For foot warts: wear slippers in pools, gyms and communal bathrooms.
  6. Genital warts are a different condition needing a dedicated consultation, and a vaccine protects against the types that cause them.
