Advice for Acne Patients

A patient advice sheet — 8 practical points. Reviewed and updated by Dr. Abdulaziz AlRashed, July 2026.

The advice

  1. Do not squeeze or pick pimples — this causes permanent scars that are difficult and costly to treat.
  2. Wash your face only twice daily with a gentle medicated cleanser for oily skin; avoid harsh scrubbing and rough exfoliants.
  3. Use a daily oil-free (non-comedogenic) sunscreen — acne treatments make the skin more sun-sensitive.
  4. Use an oil-free moisturizer for the dryness caused by retinoid creams.
  5. Choose make-up labelled non-comedogenic and remove it before sleep.
  6. Diet: studies link milk (especially skim) and high-sugar foods with acne in some patients — cutting back may help. Whey protein supplements can worsen acne.
  7. Eat plenty of vegetables and fruit; limit fast and fatty foods.
  8. Be patient: improvement takes 6–8 weeks — do not stop treatment early.
